SAM the MAN!

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

On page (4) of today’s Bucks County Herald newspaper is a story on one of my most dedicated, hard-working and most improved clients…Sam Miller.

You may remember Sam from a previous blog post I wrote about him in December of last year.  Sam is such a great kid and his story is so incredible that it deserves another blog post.

He survived a life-threatining car accident…
Had titanium rods put in his legs…
He was confined to a wheelchair for 3 months…

Sam’s future didn’t look too bright….according to the medical experts, that is.

How about according to SAM?

Was Sam downhearted?
Did he believe the Doctors?
What exactly was on Sam’s mind?

Let me tell you, the ONLY thing on Sam’s mind was…..how FAST he was going to PROVE EVERYONE WRONG!

And He did just that!

We took a lot  of pictures for the newspaper but, of course, due to space limitations, they could not all be used.

So I decided to include a “behind-the-scenes” look at Sam’s program by showing you two of the 9 main exercises that were KEY in Sam’s rebuilding phase that we’ve been working on for the past 8 months.

A BEHIND-THE-SCENES Look at Sam’s Program

That’s Sam and I in my training studio.  Wish they would’ve used this picture!

Front Rollout on Ball – Start Position

Ok.  Here’s a KEY exercise that Sam’s body was in desperate need of:  The Front Rollout using the Stability Ball.  When Sam first tried this one, his body structure simply could not handle it.  His body was moving in every direction EXCEPT for the direction he was supposed to move in!

Today…Sam has mastered this movemenmt and I now have to find different ways to challenge him with it!

Here’s another KEY movement Sam’s body needed to master and control for his body to fully recover.  The Lunge & Pushout with Bands.  This was another one that Sam’s body just could not seem to control at all….at first that is.

Today….Sam is super strong AND stable with this movement and has absolute control over it!

Lunge & Pushout with Bands – Mid Position

These simple, yet extremely tough exercises rebalanced Sam’s inner-workings allowing his body to now function as one TEAM again.

A much BETTER team.  And his results prove it.

Thanks for trusting in me and my approach Sam.

I TOLD you we could do it!

Keep up the good work!

Talking to the Youth of Council Rock South HS

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Had a great time speaking at a special Health & Fitness Day at Council Rock High School South last month.

Myself along with Nita Keesler and Sue Macnerny were those invited.

Being that I used to be a fat, out-of-shape kid growing up with major lower-back issues, I was very excited to not just give a lecture….OR speak on a certain subject….but to really TALK to them.

I wanted to get the message across to the high school youth at Council Rock the benefits of being proactive with their health & fitness.

On the importance and vital need for them to get a head start on developing sound eating and exercise habits NOW….before the bad habits get too ingrained making them VERY difficult to break.

I challenged them to think….

I told them ”Did you know that experts in the health & medical field say that this generation of kids – that means EVERY ONE of you sitting here today, will be the FIRST generation in history to have worse health and may not out live it’s parents?”

“How does that make you feel?”

Then I reassured them “I am here to tell you, that it DOES NOT have to be that way!  I am proof of it.  You CAN change for the better, IF you want to.”

“So my question to each and every one of you is…Do YOU want to?”

It was a great experience and I Thank Jami Appenzeller-Yancey of PhillyFIT Magazine, Trap Mcormack and the staff at Council Rock HS for arranging the event.

Here are some pictures of that day:

Here I am stating my case and getting the youthful crowd all worked up…

Here I am with Nita, Sue and the some of the Physical Education Staff at Council Rock South.

We had great time and got great feedback from the kids and the Staff.

What more could you want?

Thanks again guys!

The PHillyFIT Wellness Retreat was Incredible!

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Just got back from Avalon, NJ where I was presenting at the 3rd annual PhillyFIT Wellness Retreat, and man was it powerful!

The positive energy there is intoxicating…the support is overwhelming and the guidance the attendees get from the ‘experts’…starts to finally ‘sink in’.

In fact, it sinks in SO much, that the attendees really feel empowered to change themselves and their lives for the better.

You can see it…
You can feel it…
You can sense it in EVERY possible way…

It’s hard for me to explain the true scope of this event, but it’s a great thing to be a part of.  And it’s even greater to see the impact it has on people’s lives.

A BIG Thank You to Jami Appenzeller-Yancey, publisher of PhillyFIT Magazine and creator of the event, for wanting me to a part of her expert panel!

I loved being a part of it for the second time and was happy to fulfill whatever role I could in the process of any of the attendees progress.

It’s extremely satisfying and humbling all at the same time.

Here are some pictures of the incredible event:

That’s the Retreat practitioners and the attendees going through a workout with my friend and colleague John Fairchild.

Here’s John again, who is a nutritionist and was a professional chef for years, preparing lunch with the rest of the Retreat nutritionist and chef team: Susie Beiler, Claudine Ascher and Joanna Chodorowska.

Here I am, along with the Retreat team, going through some dynamic warm-up drills prior to doing the high performance agility workout prepared by Julius King.  Great job Julius!

And here’s John Fairchild in the kitchen yet AGAIN, along with Jami in the background offering up some food and the rest of the Retreat crew, as John delivers an impromptu healthy cooking lesson for us as we all helped prepare dinner for that evening.

(Much Kudos to John for designing the week’s menu and preparing some of the healthiest, tastiest and visually appealing food I have EVER eaten!  Before we all left the Retreat to come home, we actually all gave John a HUGE round of applause and standing ovation for a job that was phenomenally well-done on his part.  THANKS again John!)

And Thanks again to the entire Retreat crew of practitioners and attendees.

Another job well done guys!

Looking forward to NEXT year!
