FREE Special Coaches Clinic: Youth Fitness & Sports Training 101

This special workshop is specifically designed with the youth between the ages of 8-15 years and young adult athlete in mind.  You will learn the basics on how to fully strengthen and prepare your athletes for the unique needs and physical demands of fitness & sports training for their developing bodies.

At this FREE workshop you will learn WHY:

  • Traditional training alone is not enough for maximum results.
  • Movement and Core training is critical for youth athletes.
  • Youths have to develop ‘smart’ muscle, not just strong muscles to win.
  • Using scaled-down versions of adult training programs for youth athletes is the biggest mistake you can ever make – they will play worse and get injured faster!
  • You need to take time to develop ‘teamwork’ within the body for maximum performance and continued progress for the youth athlete.

The Bucks County Physical Culture and Barbell Club – our first meetup!

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

I am on a mission to bring back the methods and mindset of the old-school Physical Culture back to where it belongs.

Here’s why:

Performance-enhancing drugs has set Exercise Science BACK 40-50 years because they have influenced MOST programs that people follow today.  Is it any wonder that most people are not happy with their results?  They are following programs that really only work if you are on steroids.

How did people train BEFORE steroids existed?

THAT is what you need to learn - if you ever hope to attain the type of health, fitness and performance you desire.

Especially since THOSE methods still work so much better than anything else out there today.

And that is what I began to teach with my NEW group – The Bucks County Physical Culture and Barbell Club.  Anyone can join and it’s FREE.

Here are some pictures of our FIRST meeting:

We’re getting started and I’m handing out the agendas..

PCBC 3

Introducing myself and getting the discussion started. I am very excited and raring to go!

I stared by stating this SIMPLE Reality:

1. The Problem: Every year health & fitness indicators get worse…
2. The Solution: Every year we have more and more fitness & diet “solutions”…
3. The Result?: See #1…

Hmmm…does anyone see a problem here? We live in an age where there are MORE fitness books, diet books, DVD’s, videos, audio programs than ever existed before….WHY aren’t they helping?

I know why….and I shared it with the group.

PCBC 4

So far everyone’s listening…good!

PCBC 5

Getting into some serious myth-busting and trying to convince the group the importance of taking the “red pill” – how most of the exercise methods of today confuse and disrupt the body making it very difficult to attain the results they want. And which methods of exercise does the body UNDERSTAND the best and will work the quickest in delivering maximum results.

PCBC 6

Listening to someone ASK a great question…very good!

PCBC 7

Giving a brief demo on the super beneficial swinging exercises that can be done with the Indian Clubs. An old-school tool that still works better than many machines and exercises today when used properly.

PCBC 10

Now getting everyone into the act! Warming people up for some basic assessments and exercises that will demonstrate to each their own body’s muscle imbalances, compensation patterns, neuromuscular deficiencies and bio-individuality.

PCBC 13

Explaining WHY they all felt what they felt during the exercises, why it was very different for each of them and what they need to fix it, if needed.

 PCBC 14

Explaining basic core function and how the nervous system fires the muscles of the body from the ‘inside-out’. How it all relates to the way their bodies will perform any exercise. And how the original Physical Culture method of exercise worked the body in a balanced and proper way.

PCBC 16

Closing out our FIRST meeting and Thanking them all for attending. Everyone was excited for our future meetings, and hopefully with more people too!

Fernando’s Log: Week Two at the PhillyFIT Youth Football Camp

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Week Two:

I closed out my stint at the PhillyFIT Youth Football Camp yesterday.

What a great time!

As I said last week, one of the BEST ways I could contribute would be to EDUCATE the kids on proper Core training for their growing bodies AND doing a basic structural body diagnostic screening.

This kind of screen can detect any muscle imbalances that may be brewing within thier developing bodies that could not only be preventing them from attaining peak performance but more importantly, increase their risk for injury….and we don’t want that!

Detecting these ”weak” spots at an early age is KEY in PREVENTING any major issues from developing when they get older.

It’s a shame that SO many – TOO many  –  trainers and coaches in my field do NOT take the time to learn these valuable ways to ‘screen’ the human body.

At least I was able to help THESE kids by giving them an INDIVIDUALIZED exercise routine based on the results of their screening and hopefully prevent THEM form developing any problems…which made me feel VERY GOOD about the whole thing.  The fact that the kids were very receptive made it even better.

Here are some picturesof my time at the PhillyFIT Youth Football Camp:

PhillyFIT Football Camp 3

Here I am speaking to the kids about developing good habits…

PhillyFIT Football Camp 4

PhillyFIT Football Camp 5

Here’s an example of me screening one of the Camp kids.  I started with a basic analysis of their overall body structure and body-type screening…

PhillyFIT Football Camp 7

Then moved on to a simple Push-up HOLD screening to check core stability…

PhillyFIT Football Camp 8

Then moved into more specific tests based on EACH individual kid…for THIS Camper I did an Overhead Squat exercise…

PhillyFIT Football Camp 12

Now based on this OTHER Camper’s body, I needed to do more upper body testing, so I had him do a simple Standing Arm Pull-back..

PhillyFIT Football Camp 11

The result of performing these screens was designing a simple personal exercise routine that I wrote out for EACH Camper based on THEIR personal developing body that would literally take ONLY minutes a day.

Minutes that could PREVENT serious LIFE LONG orthopoedic issues for these kids in the future…

And people wonder why I LOVE what I do!

Being part of the Camp was a great experience and I Thank Jami, Lloyd and the entire PhillyFIT Team for choosing me to be a part of it all.

Looking forward to NEXT year guys!

Fernando’s Log: Week One at the PhillyFIT Youth Football Camp

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Week One:

Had a great time yesterday presenting at the PhillyFIT Youth Football Camp that is being led by past Temple University Footbal star and Dallas Cowboy – Lloyd Yancey.

I was very excited to help in anyway that I could.  And one of the the BEST ways to EDUCATE the kids on proper Core training for their growing bodies AND doing a basic structural body diagnostic screening.

I wish someone would have done that for ME when I was growing up.

Maybe I wouldn’t have destoryed MY lower-back at age 17!

Oh well…at least I was able to help THESE kids and hopefully prevent THEM form developing any problems…which made me feel VERY GOOD about the whole thing.

AND the fact that the kids were very receptive made it even better.

Looking forward to NEXT week’s Camp!  And l hope to post some pictures and video too.

Stay tuned…

Fernando at the PhillyFIT Football Camp!

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

I am very excited to have been chosen as the sports performance trainer assisting in PhillyFIT Magazine’s first ever “Youth Football Camp” during the last 2 weeks in July 2009.

The Camp will be for youth athletes between the ages of 9-13 years and is headed up by past Temple University football star, NFL player and Dallas Cowboy – Lloyd Yancey.

Being hand-picked by Lloyd to be on the team he’s putting together to teach kids how to train the RIGHT WAY, meant a great deal to me and I am really looking forward to being a part of it.

Thanks Lloyd!

Talking to the Youth of Council Rock South HS

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Had a great time speaking at a special Health & Fitness Day at Council Rock High School South last month.

Myself along with Nita Keesler and Sue Macnerny were those invited.

Being that I used to be a fat, out-of-shape kid growing up with major lower-back issues, I was very excited to not just give a lecture….OR speak on a certain subject….but to really TALK to them.

I wanted to get the message across to the high school youth at Council Rock the benefits of being proactive with their health & fitness.

On the importance and vital need for them to get a head start on developing sound eating and exercise habits NOW….before the bad habits get too ingrained making them VERY difficult to break.

I challenged them to think….

I told them ”Did you know that experts in the health & medical field say that this generation of kids – that means EVERY ONE of you sitting here today, will be the FIRST generation in history to have worse health and may not out live it’s parents?”

“How does that make you feel?”

Then I reassured them “I am here to tell you, that it DOES NOT have to be that way!  I am proof of it.  You CAN change for the better, IF you want to.”

“So my question to each and every one of you is…Do YOU want to?”

It was a great experience and I Thank Jami Appenzeller-Yancey of PhillyFIT Magazine, Trap Mcormack and the staff at Council Rock HS for arranging the event.

Here are some pictures of that day:

Here I am stating my case and getting the youthful crowd all worked up…

Here I am with Nita, Sue and the some of the Physical Education Staff at Council Rock South.

We had great time and got great feedback from the kids and the Staff.

What more could you want?

Thanks again guys!

“If I was a kid growing up today…I’d be OBESE!”

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

That’s exactly what I thought to myself after reading yet ANOTHER article about the declining health & fitness indicators of today’s youth.

This is a SERIOUS problem folks.

And it’s a shame on top of that.

While there are MANY factors that contribute to this, (social issues, big business, etc..)  the bottom line is that kids today have MORE FOOD around than EVER before AND are a lot LESS ACTIVE than just a couple of generations ago.

Being that I WAS a fat kid that loved to eat when I was growing up, I can relate.

And if I was growing up in TODAY’S environment….there’s no doubt in my mind that I would’ve been obese.

I wouldn’t have stayed that way though.

You see, I WANTED to change, I just didn’t know HOW.  And no one at the time taught me the RIGHT way of doing things.

Which is why today, I always try to encourage and educate kids as much as I can.  I teach them to THINK healthy.  Then sooner or later, the ACTIONS follow.

Then I remembered something…

I remembered a GREAT opportunity that was presented to me not too long ago.

An opportunity to make a BIG impact in this area that is so very PERSONAL to me.

And it happened back in April of this year….

“Ex-fat kid that hated ‘gym’ class, now turned Trainer, teaches the ‘gym’ Teachers about exercise!”

Yep.  That’s what the headline would’ve been if the newspapers would have covered the workshop I did for the Centennial School District back in April.  (or maybe not, it’s a but wordy…)

When the Centennial School District invited me to give a workshop on ‘Functional & Core Training for Youths’ , for their entire Physical Education Staff, I jumped on it.

What a way to help kids, right at the SOURCE!

Here are some pictures of that workshop:

Here I am introducing myself to Physical Education Staff…

Here I am discussing the variety of \'functional\' progressions of the single most-abused exercise....the Push-up.

Here are a couple of pictures of me demonstrating the proper ‘functional progressions’ for what has to be the best, yet most abused and misunderstood exercises of all time, – the Push-Up.

And that’s me observing the technique of the P.E. Teacher performing some exercises using the powerfully effective, yet under-used exercise tool….resistance tubing.

I had blast that day!

I had such a great feeling that day because I KNEW that, in my own small way, I was going to make an IMPACT on more kids than I could EVER reach on my own.

Maybe even some kids that were just like ME.

Talk about coming around ’full-circle’, huh?

Sports Training Summer Camp

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Calling all Parents of young athletes!

Do you want your son or daughter to become a better athlete and reduce the likelihood of injury?

Today’s conditioning programs for young athletes lack many components and are therefore not complete.

The result?  An INCOMPLETE athlete.

How do we fix it?  You need to assess and “fill in the gaps” that traditional programs leave out.

Here are 4 pitfalls that Brian Grasso, top youth conditioning expert with the IYCA, says that happen to young athletes who fail to address the complete picture:

a. They are used to pounding weight in the gym so don’t have much in the way of solid form with respect to lift mechanics.

b. Due to growth and other extraneous factors, they are tight through the hip complex and weak in the posterior chain.

c. They don’t typically work on mobility, active flexibility or concentrated torso strength.

d. Their movement mechanics have probably never even been addressed.

It’s a shame that with  ALL the good training information out there today, these things are STILL happening to our young athletes.

No fear.  ALL these WILL be addressed at my 6 Week Sports Training Camp this summer!
