Fernando's Story
Listen, I am not the Mr. America, hard-body type trainer that doesn’t have to exercise and eat right to stay in shape.
I am just like you. Same struggles. Same obstacles.
Growing up, I was the typical overweight, un-athletic, out-of-shape kid.
I had little muscle on my frame, was sporting very thin arms, legs and had A LOT of fat around my middle.
In fact, people used to call me “egg on stilts”!
I exercised on and off for a while, never seeing any real progress.
Then at 17 years of age, I severely injured my low-back, moving a couch, leaving me doubled over and in pain for days.
I couldn’t believe that could happen to ME at 17!
That was IT! I was tired of being fat and out of shape. I was determined to exercise, eat right and get in shape!
I ran into some problems.
No matter what I tried, my body would not change.
To make matters worse, about 2 – 3 times a year my back would go out, leaving me very stiff, in pain and not able to move for days. All I could do is lay in bed.
However, I did not quit and I struggled year after year to attain the smallest of changes.
And then it happened.
By the time I was in my mid-20’s, I finally got there. I had lost a lot of fat, built a little muscle and I learned a whole lot during the process.
I became a bona-fide “student” of the human body mainly because my body seemed to defy change. I had to be very methodical, scientific and basically use every trick in the book to get my body to change.
I still didn’t look like Mr. America, I don’t have the structure or the proper mix of genetic DNA to build that that kind of body, but considering where I started from, it was a great accomplishment.
In fact, the experience changed me so much that it made me re-think my choice of career.
Another problem.
Soon after, my back went out on me again!....real bad this time. In fact, the pain was so excruciating that I literally could not move. I had to call 911.
I was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance and stayed in the emergency room for most of the night. As I laid there in the hospital bed, pumped up with pain killers and muscle relaxants and barely able to move, I kept asking myself:
“How could this be happening to me?...
“I exercised, lost a lot of fat, got stronger, am in better shape and did everything I was supposed to do….how did this STILL happen?”
“What went wrong?”
And I had just begun my new career as a Trainer! “How could I ever help others, if I can’t even help myself!?”
I was SO frustrated.
“Would I ever “fix” my back?” I thought to myself. “I’m only 24 years old! Where will I be 10, 20 or 30 years from now? In a wheelchair?”
After I was discharged, I had to take muscle relaxants, missed work and walked with a help of a cane for about 10 days as I recovered.
THAT became my turning point.
Obviously I was missing something. Even though I exercised, used good form, technique, got stronger, lost fat, improved my conditioning and changed the appearance of my body….my back was still weak.
Why? How?
I resolved within myself that I would NEVER go back to the hospital because of my back ever again.
I dug deeper.
I needed to examine the body from a more complete approach. To look at the “big picture.”
I needed to educate myself in ALL the pieces of the puzzle.
So I hit the books again but I took it a step further this time. I took advanced certifications, attended every seminar and conference that featured the very best experts in my field and put in a tremendous amount of time in researching all the data and self-study.
I wasn’t going to rely on what ”they” said anymore. I was going to find out the facts for MYSELF.
I began to understand much more about:
functional bio-mechanics
neuro-physiology
human movement science
the musculoskeletal system
core strength & stability
structural integrity
And here’s what I learned about myself:
My back was not weak…. my abdominals and core were.
Even though I got stronger…. my stabilizing muscles didn’t.
Even though I stretched a lot…. I had tight muscles all over my body.
Even though I exercised my entire body….. my body was not working as a “team”.
Even though I worked for balance…. I had muscle imbalances all over my body.
Guess what else I found out?
All the typical methods we are told to use, are useless for the majority of people!
And learned about other methods, the ORIGINAL methods that you hardly ever hear about, that worked SO much better!
No wonder I was so frustrated…no wonder my back was still weak…I wasn’t getting ALL the information!
And THAT is when things started to change. I found all those extra pieces of the puzzle and more importantly….they all started to fit.
The “scientist” in me took over. I said to myself, “I’ll work with this new approach and see if it works. If these are the real reasons why my back is such a problem, then this will fix it. I’m going to test it out.”
It worked!
Yep. I fixed my back. No more back going out. No more lying in bed for days and no more walking around with a cane!
All without using pain-killers, muscle relaxants, going to a physical therapist or going under the surgeon’s knife.
Will it work for others?
I reasoned that if the principles I used were scientifically valid, they just HAD TO work for others too, right?
So I slowly started switching all my clients back to the ORIGINAL functional approach to exercise.
It worked for them too! And it worked EXTREMELY well. Oh, my clients had already been seeing some pretty good results. This new approach just accelerated them even more.
So much more that I began to get the reputation as the personal trainer “of lost causes.” Getting results for people whose bodies seemed to defy change.
Even those that had already tried many different programs or other personal trainers with little success where all of a sudden beginning to lose fat, build muscle and get fit!
I had finally had found a truly scientific approach that would work for ANYONE.
It works… I lived it.
My approach works. I lived it. Today, in my late-30’s, I am leaner, stronger, healthier and in much better shape than in my youth and I have finally left my back problems and hospital rooms in the past.
More importantly, I have been very successful in helping people do the exact same thing – creating the healthy, lean, strong, energetic body & life they deserve!
